I have no clue how scientific this app is, but Sleep Cycle allows you to get an overview of the amount of sleep you got during a night ranging from 'awake' over 'dream' to 'deep sleep'. It measures your sleep by using the accelerometer (or movement-sensor), so you just need to place your iPhone at the corner of your mattress, and the app does the rest.

Here is the result of the last two nights, being a father of a 2 week old baby. And this actually matches my sleeping behaviour (or non-sleeping behaviour to be more precise) so it seems to work.
Went to bed / woke up: 01:59 / 07:02
Total time: 5h 03m

Went to bed / woke up: 20:47 / 07:10
Total time: 10h 22m

So now you should understand why I drink a RedBull. So if I'm a bit brief and in a bad mood, please don't be angry...

Sleep Deprivation
Sleep deprivation is one of the chief causes of accidents in the home, including accidents relative to infants.
Of course, one wants to be responsive to babies in the night. On the other hand, a parent who is going to have to commute to work and do other things that involve the safety of others, needs to be judicious about getting up in the night and then attempting to function as if he or she were a fully rested individual.
One of the reasons for parental leave, especially when both parents are working, is that it does no one any good to have walking zombies around the work place or on the freeways.
If there is a parent in the home full time, that is the best solution for all concerned. The partner working outside the home should then expect the home parent to take care of all night duties.
In my case, my husband stayed home. If he had been unable or unwilling to do that, I would have. To abandon a child or to attempt to "adjust" the needs of the body in a way that puts all in jeopardy can be rationialized, but it can not be made right.

App
Very interesting application, makes me think if it uses acelerometer fine detail data to register sleep patterns (I think so).
looks cool!
id love to try this app out, pretty clever how it works, good luck with the new baby, hopefully you'll be getting more in the deep sleep area!
Go figure...
Next time we know iPhone'll have the breath test to see if one's drunk too much (not a bad idea actually!)

Hehe, this is a really nice representation of the crappy sleep young parents get! I was also considering to buy this app a few weeks ago but was seriously doubting its effectiveness. I'll have to get it now :)
RE:
It is amazing that you can do this with an phone. You would need to be very careful though, especially if you knock your phone off the bed and end up smashing the screen! How durable are the iphones? I've dropped my nokia n78 a few times and it is ok so far.
Wow, these iphone apps are
Wow, these iphone apps are getting more and more advanced. I had no idea they could be so versatile. Maybe its time to switch from my old Nokia to a shiny new iphone!
